the changing notion of beauty?

Western media's relentless focus on external appearance has changed our modern perception of beauty.There is increasing trend that people are giving up inner cultivation for external remodeling.Cosmetics, plastic surgery is becoming more available and accessible with the growing affluence. All these contributes to the increasing "shallowness" of our society. What are your views on this.

it is not westerm media, it is the bearings of materialistic out look in the western societies. And this, precisely is why nothing is lastng in the west, this synthetic, artificial beaty is too shallow and shall not last longer. Internal beauty, on the contrary, shall be lasting longer, perhaps for ever. A shift from materials to spiritualism shall do the trick, but how, remains the question for you all. There is a joke: " Give your heart to a girl, she breaks it into pieces in moments, but give your heart to God, he mends it and makes it new".

I think that in a good part we are the product of our economy: selling beauty is just as selling power, but in the end and generally speaking women pay the price of it, by buying into that, by thinking that only external beauty is what makes you a wonderful person, accepted, loved. Unfortunately this has become more and more realistic: men expect that kind of beauty and women comply. I just wonder if this is only a problem in the West though, I think it is a problem everywhere (in China cosmetic surgery is really on the rise)

It's hard to say so much has changed... I guess external beauty has always been something that a lot of people tried to achieve.Tattoo's and other things to make bodies more attractive were found on lots and lots of mummies and other people that lived long before us.Techniques have changed, that's for sure. The Media circus has also changed, in the old days we just knew the 1000-2000 people in our village, now it's worldwide.So... I guess people in the old days were about as shallow/rich as they are now. Personally I also like to look at people who I think are beautiful, but I rather look at natural beauty. I also rather not look at "The" perfect measurements or age.I think the woman on the photo of the given link has lots and lots of beauty. She does show life to the fullest IMO. Others may see her as the most ugly and mean looking person they've ever seen though. I'd rather spend an evening with her as with an botox silicon Barbie if I didn't know anything else about both.
