| | Should women above 40 cut their hair? I've heard this before - especially from my mother who has had short hair all her life. She always criticizes older women who have longer hair. What are your thoughts on women above 40 who have longer hair past shoulder length?I felt pressure to have a shorter, professional haircut because my mom always said it looked better on me and also because it was easier to get a job when I looked the part and people took me more seriously. I think even though I am now 38 I want to grow it out because I'm sick of having short hair. I want something different.

| | NOOOO!!! I can't stand seeing old women with their standard issue gray afro perms. When I'm old, I want a silver fox with flowing locks.

| | What does age have to do with it? Until pretty recently in history, women had long hair all of their lives, and just wore it pinned up. Were those women somehow breaking some rule by not cutting their hair off, too? Fashion comes and goes. Women shouldn't be pressured to conform to someone else's ideas of what is or is not acceptable. Wear your hair the way you want, regardless of your age, and if people don't like it, well, they can leave you off their Xmas card list, right?

| | Long hair looks great on women over 40 as long as they tie it up in some way. It looks appalling when they wear it loose. Long hair worn loose is strictly for younger women -- women with pretty hair which deserves to be displayed to full advantage.

| | If the hair is still strong and healthy looking why not to keep the length? Depends on life style, culture, individual style of a woman.... look at native american women - they look beautiful wearing long straight hair (actually men do too!). But generally, I know what you mean. Once I get there, no more long hair for me!

| | NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!never ever cut your hair short. very few women look good with short hair. you have to have the face for it and about 99% of women don't.short hair makes you look masculine. the reason older women cut their hair short is because they're already married and don't need to look good for men and don't want to be bothered with playing with it. but hats off to her husband who has to wake up next to her every morning.
