Default Industrial Designer - Career ?

I have a B.S. in Economics and currently working in corporate accounting. My annual salary is roughly 45K and it seems very hard to move up in this field. I have a friend who is an engineer and suggested that I look into industrial design as a career. I have always been interested in the artistic field and created websites in the past. However, I do not have any formal education in industrial art. What do I need to do in order move into this field? Would I need to get into engineering or simply take technical courses and hope to land an entry-level job? I don't think I can quit my job and go to an expensive art school. What other options do I have? Should I take random courses.. if so.. which ones?

Industrial Design is in fact one of the most interesting fields. Beside the fact that is requires an open artistic mind, there are numerous technical skill aspects required in many career opportunities out there today. Many jobs in the field recommend you are an expert in the specific field of interest. If you are designing products, such as a radio, you will need to take classes that are geared toward engineering and design. Many jobs do however recommend going into the field with some "art" knowledge. Every position is different, but what makes them the same is that the more you possess the higher you will go. Economics is actually an extremely important part of industrial design because of how things are being done today. Best of luck and remember that sometimes random courses may lead you into something you never realized existed! Also, don't forget to have fun!
