Why do men's designer jeans run big?

i don't get it. measuring tape says i have a 33' waist (waist being the area you wear low rise jeans). i just bought a pair of sevens in a 31'. they fit well, but i can fit about 3-4 fingers (when the waist is stretched out)in there. what will they be like after theyre washed? i just dont want to keep them and never wear em cuz they fit looser than they do now. are there any rules of thumb i should know regarding designer sizes vs actual waist sizes, shrinkage, and what brands run big/small?

Brands and where they are made do make a difference. You said you measured the area you wear low rise. That's not your waist size! And if anything when they are washed and dried they will shrink, just like us in cold water. Rule off thumb, try them on before you buy em. Good Luck!!!
